About Reflections

Clayton Elementary had a hugely successful Reflections program this year!  We had 457 entries, and they were just amazing.  Please click the links below to view the gallery of award-winning artwork that went on to compete in the Austin Council level.  Congratulations to all of our Clayton Cardinals.  We’re very proud of each and every one of you who participated!

Reflections is a PTA-sponsored arts-in-education program that encourages children to express themselves through literature, art, music, photography, dance and film.

This year’s theme is “Beauty is…” And since this is an art contest, we feel that anyone who makes a genuine effort should win.  Every child who enters will take home a trophy!

There are some rules and guidelines for entering in each category.  Just click on the links to the right of this page to see the specific guide for each type of artwork.  Your child can submit as many entries as he or she wishes in each category.  For instance, kids can do three paintings and one music entry.  The artwork can’t be three-dimensional, but the child can take a photo of a sculpture or Lego castle they’ve created, and they can enter that in the Photography category.  They could also film a movie of the sculpting process and enter the Film/Production category.  Also, please make sure that the entries aren’t huge … there’s a 24×30″ size limit.

Creating art is a valuable learning experience.  Please encourage children to participate so that they can bask in the glory of receiving a trophy at the awards ceremony December 10th!

Entries will be judged based on quality, creativity and interpretation of this year’s theme, “Beauty is…”  Every entry needs the accompanying Student Entry Form, which you can pick up extra copies of in the front office or download from the link at the right of this page under “Documents.”  Some artwork will move on to the local, state and national Reflections competition.  The students whose entries are chosen by our local artist judges to be the top 20 percent in each category will also receive a medal at the awards ceremony.

Insider tip:  Last year, the Visual Arts category had the most entries, followed by the Photography category.  If you submit a Dance, Music or Film entry, the odds are much higher that you’ll be in the top 20 percent of those categories and can win a medal.

This year we’re adding another dimension to the competition.  The class that turns in the most artwork for Reflections will get to have an ice cream party, and they will win these two beautiful “diamond” bracelets for their teacher!  Congratulations to Ms. McDonnell’s second grade class for winning the 2009-2010 competition!

One lucky teacher will win these!

Clayton Elementary is proud to host the awards ceremony for the entire Austin Independent School District this year as well.  The top 20 percent of each school’s entries will be judged, and those entries will go on to compete at the state level.
